Orbital Debris

"ORBITAL DEBRIS
Brooke Inman + Leah Beeferman
June 6-28, 2008
Opening Friday June 6th, 6 - 10pm
Closing Saturday June 28th, 5 - 7pm, a conversation with the artists at 5pm

Space 1026 is pleased to present "Orbital Debris," work by Brooke Inman and Leah Beeferman. Through drawing, their works constitute a pursuit of understanding and an exploration of the worlds we inhabit.

Brooke's work focuses on revealing the complexity of the mundane, obsessing over the purchase of an IKEA couch (and other everyday decisions, such as what color spandex to wear). Her drawings disclose a constant reorganization of personal space and a persistent questioning of self in which she is never satisfied with the answer.

Leah imagines the universe seen by a building NASA uses to track orbital debris. Her drawings are fraught with the task of giving architecture a symbolic life. Permanently stuck to the ground, yet constantly looking upward, this structure epitomizes the perseverance and limitations of imagination.

Each artist's method of spatial exploration is unique and interminable. Driven by idealism and the desire for connection, both artists are perhaps only satisfied having found a practice that shows no visible beginning or end, one of infinite playfulness and possibility.

Brooke Inman ('08) and Leah Beeferman ('09) are allies from the Master of Fine Arts Department of Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

New Camera!

The other day, I went over to a good friend of mine's house to pick up an old camera his mom didn't want anymore. I went into the situation not really expecting anything decent to come out of it; maybe just another broken camera to add to my collection. But that's why I was so psyched when she pulled this beautiful thing out of her bag. It was an old Pentax ME 35mm in really good and working condition, still in the original leather case/protector. It even came with an extra 135mm lens! I can't wait to try it out and see what kind of pictures I get out of it!

World Naked Bike Ride in the Netherlands

"On Saturday 7 June, Utrecht will play host to the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) to ‘attract some attention’ to the environment and our bodies by biking around naked. Utrecht was chosen since on the same day there will be a concert entitled ‘Geen halve maatregelen, Klimaatwet nu!’ (roughly ‘No half measures, an environmental law now!’) with performances by De Dijk and Stevie.

Besides Utrecht, more than 15 cities in 20 countries around the world will have people demonstrating for a more positive attitude towards our bodies and the environment. “But no one has to go naked”, according to the WNBR.

And now my two cents: besides posing for Spencer Tunick) or some church calendar, many naked events tend to attract white, middle aged heterosexual men, like at the naked fitness (not really mentioned, but on Dutch TV not a single other type of person could be seen). And if the white, middle aged heterosexual men are not in the event, they are the ones gawking on the sidelines. It’s just an observation, folks. If anyone qualified has a real explanation, I’m very interested."

This sounds like it would be really cool to see.

Artomatic is a 28-day event in DC showcasing over 1,000 artists in.. get this.. an abandoned office building. It started in 1999 in an old laundry building. Over 20,000 visitors attended the first Artomatic over 6 weeks.

Leesburg Sucks

Because I can't move into my house in Richmond until August, I'll be in Leesburg until then. So that means I'm a little out of touch with what's going on in Richmond in terms of the bike and art scenes. But for now check out the new links and enjoy the fruits they bear!
